The Miracle of Getting Fish to Bethel
by Mary Harmon
At the end of October, Samantha Kirstein, executive director for Fairbanks Food Bank in Alaska wrote to us:
"I am pleased to be able to tell you that we just shipped 23 cases (nearly 1,200 pounds) of SeaShare fish to Bethel. Bethel Food Bank had an article in Alaska's newspapers expressing their need to fill their pantry so Everts Air called me to see what they could air freight for us to Bethel. They had room for about 1,200 pounds of frozen and we also sent 3800 pounds of dry goods. We have never had free freight to Bethel before, so couldn't pass that up. It was wonderful to be able to help them."
Several weeks previous, SeaShare sent over 40,000 pounds wild Alaskan salmon steaks to Fairbanks Food Bank. Here is a step-by-step outline of what it took to make that happen:
- Bering Sea fishing companies donate h&g salmon to SeaShare
- Kloosterboer,Offshore Services, Inc. and Harbor Cold Storage donate storage in Dutch Harbor, Alaska
- Coastal Transportation donates the transport of frozen fish from Alaska to Seattle
- Washington Truck Dispatch takes fish from Coastal dock in Seattle to the processor
- Seafood Processors Contractors, Inc. processes the fish into steaks and repacks at a discounted rate
- Alaska Marine Line picks up the finished steaks and ships them by boat to Fairbanks at no charge
- Fairbanks Food Bank receives the shipment and puts into cold storage
- Everts Air donates a flight to Bethel
As you can see, lots of people and companies are involved along the route to get seafood to the food bank client. It takes lots of coordination, generous attitudes, and willing spirits to make all this happen. This is what SeaShare does.
