Press Release: SeaShare, High Liner Foods, US Foods to Donate 170,000 Servings of Seafood to Virginia Food Banks

Today, Seashare, a non-profit dedicated to bringing seafood to food banks, announced they have partnered with High Liner Foods in Newport News, VA and US Foods of Rosemont, Il, to donate 170,000 servings of salmon to the Capitol Area Food Bank in Washington, D.C. and Lorton, VA, and the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank in Hampton, VA.

High Liner Foods, one of the largest seafood companies in the U.S., recently approached SeaShare about donating salmon for hunger relief. SeaShare, which works with a national network of food banks, quickly identified food banks close to High Liner Foods’ Newport News facility which were able to accept such a large volume of seafood. US Foods, one of the largest food service distribution companies in the U.S., provided the freight to each of the food banks.

The donated product is pulled salmon BBQ, similar to pulled pork, but with all of the nutritional benefits of seafood: nutrient-dense protein with high levels of omega-3 fatty acids. It is easy to cook, comes frozen, and can be steamed or boiled in the package.

Jim Harmon, Executive Director at SeaShare said, “The ease of preparation is important to many families who struggle with hunger, juggling jobs and kids, finding the time to cook healthy meals can be a big challenge for food bank clients. This is a great way to get high-quality protein that is easy to prepare, in homes that would otherwise go without.”

SeaShare and High Liner Foods are long-time partners in hunger relief. Both organizations are working to ensure that the nutritional benefits of seafood are available to all Americans, including those who rely on food banks. US Foods is a leading national food service distributor. This donation was made on behalf of the National Fisheries Institute’s Future Leaders program, of which staff at High Liner Foods and US Foods are members.
