Seafood is "Soul Food"
It’s been an incredible year at SeaShare! This spring we received funding from the State of Alaska to purchase Alaska seafood, as well as freezers, for food banks and feeding centers in the 49th State. We officially launched the program and the first 42,000 pounds went out to four Alaska communities, with another round on the way to another four towns and villages in early November.
This funding enables SeaShare to expand our impact in remote and vulnerable areas in Alaska. For example, 50 families in Port Grahm, where salmon runs have failed the past three years, received Alaska sockeye irregular-size portions. One recipient expressed his gratitude, telling us the sockeye “felt like soul food.”
The launch of the Alaska grant has been extremely rewarding and SeaShare owes a big thank you to the Alaska Legislature, the Governor’s office, the Dept. of Commerce and all who advocated for this funding. Thank you!
In addition to our work in Alaska, I’m proud to announce that we passed the 1.5 million pound mark this week on our overall distribution! This is roughly 6 million nutritious seafood servings to those in need, distributed throughout 20 states…and counting! We’ve received seafood from 18 different donors and over 1 million pounds in donations from the Alaska pollock industry! I’d like to highlight Trident Seafoods, American Seafoods, and Silver Bay Seafoods, in particular, whom each donated over 100,000 pounds year-to-date, and offer a shout-out to Grobest, who joined us as a new donor this year!
The Alaska tourism industry has also stepped-up help bring nutrient-dense seafood to those in need. Holland America hosted an onboard reception where they presented SeaShare with a $5,000 donation, and also donated a free cruise which was auctioned off at the GAPP annual meeting for another $4,500. With each dollar donated to SeaShare providing six seafood servings to those in need, that’s 57,000 servings from Holland America!
I’m honored to work on behalf of the seafood industry on this worthy cause. Everything I know about the health benefits of seafood drives me to keep pushing for more seafood for hungry kids. As food insecurity continues to rise, with 1 million more American children experiencing hunger this year than last, I’m grateful to have your partnership and look forward to seeing what we can do together to finish 2024 on a strong note.
Best regards,
Hannah Lindoff
