Hunger Action Month: What can you do? Ask the candidates how they will help the 42 million Americans facing food insecurity

For the first time in Presidential debate history the public is being polled on potential questions for the candidates. The Open Debate Coalition, a coalition of advocacy and policy organizations from across the political spectrum, has made a deal with the TV networks to take public suggestion for Presidential debate questions. The 30 questions that receive the most votes will be considered. Right now questions about guns, refugees, voter ID, benefits fraud, immigrants, border security and more have thousands of votes.

We recently visited Food Lifeline's new home....

...and what a home it is! The Hunger Solution Center is a sight to behold! It's a great place for engaging volunteers, a beautiful work space, and above all, a state of the art facility for receiving and distributing food in western Washington. Food Lifeline, part of the Feeding America network of food banks, serves 275 local food banks, food pantries, hot meal programs, shelters, and after-school programs in our region, all of which have been certified to meet the highest standards for client care and food safety.

SeaShare is excited to be part of the Kitsap Great Give May 3rd!

We're thrilled to announce that SeaShare will be taking part in the Kitsap Community Foundation's Great Give day on May 3rd. Donors from all over Kitsap will come together to raise significant funds for local nonprofits, all in a single day. The Kitsap Great Give is one of over 100 local giving days taking place across the country to raise millions of dollars for the greater good. Every gift given to nonprofits will be increased by a national pool of matching funds.

The Terry Shaff Memorial Fund

Terry Shaff was a beloved and long-serving board member at SeaShare, President and CEO of the seafood company UniSea, and a former chairman of the Pacific Seafood Processors Association. When Terry passed away suddenly in late 2014, the seafood industry and community came together to recognize Terry’s leadership, his generosity, and his commitment to SeaShare’s mission to improve nutrition for the people served by food banks and feeding centers.

Food Insecurity: Arctic Heat Is Threatening Indigenous Life, and How SeaShare is Helping

Canadian author and photographer Ed Struzik wrote a compelling piece this week in Yale University's Environment 360 Magazine about climate change and food insecurity in the Arctic. In the article, Struzik wrote of the decades-long trend of extreme Arctic warming, which has led to declining sea ice, and the difficulties these changes pose for subsistence hunting and fishing. In looking at the response to declining food sources, Struzik highlighted the work of SeaShare in donating 10,000 pounds of halibut to Gambell, Savoonga, Diomede, and Wales last year.

Regal Springs Donates 5,000 Pounds of Tilapia

The Seafood Expo North America in Boston was hopping, and the Regal Springs Tilapia booth was a must-visit-must-eat. Regal Springs was making delicious fish tacos all week, and a total of 1,000 fish tacos were served. Regal Springs had pledged to donate 5 pounds of tilapia to SeaShare for every taco eaten, so will be donating 5,000 pounds of tilapia! Regal Springs has donated over 35,000 pounds of tilapia to SeaShare in the past six months, which has allowed SeaShare to provide thousands of people with nutrient-rich high quality fish.

Seafood Expo North America: Vendors Donate 22,500 Pounds of Food to Greater Boston Food Bank

Seafood Expo showcases some amazing seafood. Each year we work with the team coordinating Seafood Expo to rescue food at the end of the show for donation to the Greater Boston Food Bank. This year we are happy to report that 22,500 pounds of food was donated to the Greater Boston Food Bank from the vendors at Seafood Expo North America. Thank you to all of the vendors who made this possible! What an amazing team effort.
