SeaShare Wins Alaska SeaLife Center's Stewardship and Sustainability Award

SeaShare is thrilled to be selected to receive Alaska SeaLife Center’s Stewardship & Sustainability Award! These awards are given annually to individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the awareness and sustainability of Alaska’s marine resources. The award will be presented at the Alaska Marine Gala on February 13, 2016 in Anchorage. The Alaska SeaLife Center operates as a private, non-profit research institution and public aquarium, with wildlife response and education programs. It generates and shares scientific knowledge to promote understanding and stewardship of Alaska’s marine ecosystems.

There are no hard-and-fast rules about preparing the feast: some people cook seven fish courses, some just put a bunch of seafood in a stew and call it good. Yes, fresh and canned fish have roughly the same nutritional value, according to experts and the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Nutrient Database. And whether to eat one over the other isn’t an obvious choice, because each has advantages and disadvantages, said Alice Lichtenstein, a professor at Tufts University’s Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy.

September is Hunger Action Month

Yesterday marked the beginning of Hunger Action Month when Feeding America and member food banks ask everyone in America to take action to fight hunger in their community, all month long. SeaShare is sending a truckload of assorted pollock and cod portions to Food Bank of the Rockies in Denver, CO to kick off the month. Thanks to a generous donation and discounted processing from Trident Seafoods in Seattle, WA this translates to 144,144 servings of highly nutritious seafood for food bank recipients in the Denver area.

EAST versus WEST

The National Fisheries Institute Future Leaders Class of 2015 has kicked off a friendly competition to raise funds and pounds of seafood to assist SeaShare in getting more seafood to food banks across the country. The East versus West competition is in motion and will continue until the annual class meeting in January. The mighty Mississippi River is the delineating line for East versus West. Preferred Freezer Services employees are currently leading the campaign with East donations of over $800 in just a couple of days.
